Design and Analysis of IC Engine Components – Mechanical Design

Abstract:

  • IC engine is the main component of any automobile
  • IC engine is not just one component, it is an assembly of multiple components
  • It is very important to know how much pressure, load and tensions are acting on these parts and also the effect caused by these parameters must be estimated. Therefore, we selected 3 IC ENGINE components
  • The 3 components are PISTON, CRANKSHAFT AND CONNECTING ROD
  • IC Engine Components We design these components in pro-e And finally analyze them in ANSYS to estimate the best material

Introduction :

  • The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (usually a fossil fuel) takes place with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber.
  • In the internal combustion engine, chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy
  • Internal combustion engines are most commonly used
  • An IC Engine consists of hundreds of different parts, which are important for its proper functioning.

However, the main important components are described below.
1. Cylinder
2. Cylinder head
3. Piston
4. Piston ring
5. Connecting Rod
6. Crankshaft
7. Crank box
8. Steering wheel etc.

Here we consider 3 main parts, namely,
1.Piston
2. Connecting Rod
3. Crankshaft

Result and conclusion:

Through structural analysis of individual parts, it is clear that structural steel can withstand more stress, followed by aluminum alloys when compared to normal cast iron parts.

And these results continued with the assembly of the 3 parts, that is; piston, connecting rod, crankshaft

With these results it can be concluded that parts made with structural steel are better than those made of aluminum, cast iron and aluminum is better than cast iron.

Future scope:

The 3 components are PISTON, CRANKSHAFT and CONNECTING ROD, designed in Pro-E and will finally be analyzed in ANSYS to estimate the effects caused by pressure and load, but thermal analysis can also be done to analyze temperature and its effects .

As there are some reasons for not fully implementing aluminum and other materials into IC engine parts, they should be overcome through the extension of experiments.
