Casting Process – Mechanic Interview Questions with Answers

Mechanical interview questions about the casting manufacturing process.

Casting Process – Mechanic Interview Questions with Answers

1. What do you know about casting?

The process of producing metal parts by pouring molten metal into a mold cavity of the desired shape and allowing the metal to solidify. The solidified metal part is called a casting.

2. What is the recruitment allowance? How is it provided for standards?

If the vertical faces of the pattern are perpendicular to the parting line, the edges of the mold may be damaged when the pattern is removed from the sand. Consequently, the vertical faces are tapered to facilitate pattern removal. This slight taper given to the vertical sides of the pattern caused stretch tolerance.

3. What are the common allowances provided in the standard?

The various types of standard grants typically awarded are;

1. Reduction allowance

2. Machining or finishing

3. Draft provision or tapering

4. Distortion or curvature tolerance

5. Allowance for beating or shaking

4. Is the pattern different from the cast?

The pattern is a little bigger in size compared to the casting. The pattern can be in two or three pieces, while casting is done in one piece.

5. Name the various materials in the pattern.

  • Wood – Teak wood, white pine etc.
  • Metal – cast iron, brass, aluminum etc.
  • Plaster
  • Plastic
  • Wax
6. What are the different types of patterns used in foundries?

Solid or single piece pattern, combined plate pattern, split pattern, sweep pattern, skeleton pattern, segmented pattern, loose piece pattern, shell pattern.

7. What are the uses of the runner and riser?

Hall:

  • It is used to make a hole in the cover.
  • It receives the molten metal from the casting basin and passes it to the cavity.
Ascending:

  • It supplies excess molten metal to the solidifying casting.
  • Allows air to escape.
8. What are thirds?

Sometimes it is not possible to provide sufficient support for a core in the mold being

spilled, if the cores are larger in size. In these cases, the core is supported by rigid metal

pieces called thirds.

9. Name four different casting defects.

  • Shifts – Two incompatible or fused halves
  • Hot tear – Internal or external cracks
  • Fins – Fine projection of the parting line
  • Inclusions – Foreign material present in the casting
10. What is the function of the nucleus?

The core functions are:

  • The core provides a means of forming the main internal cavity for hollow casting.
  • Core provides external undercut feature.
  • Cores can be inserted to obtain deep recesses in the casting.
  • Cores can be used to increase mold strength.
10. Explain the term conditioning.

Fettling is the name given to all the operations that help the casting to look good. Includes removal of cores, sand, gates, risers, runners and other unwanted projections from the casting.

11. Classify molding machines.

1. Juicer Machine.

2.Shaking machine.

3.Jolt – Juicing machine.

4.Slingshot machines.

5. Patten drawing machines.
