Bevel Gear Operated Screw Jack for Lifting Operation

Abstract.

With the increasing level of technology, researchers around the world are continuously working to improve and implement better and robust material design in the workplace for productivity, efficiency and effectiveness. The detailed design procedure of a quick lift screw jack is
presented in this article. The design is fundamentally a modification of the conventional scissor jack.
Problems associated with conventional jacks are the ergonomic obstacles faced by operators due to prolonged bending or squatting positions during operation. These waist and back pain problems are a result of continually turning the wrench or crankshaft in an uncomfortable position for a long period of time. This has led to the design and modification of quick-lift jacks with gear arrangements that are safe, reliable, and capable of lifting or lowering heavy loads with little effort. The results showed that the introduction of the crank and gear mechanism would help reduce the difficulty of operation, reduce time, increase efficiency and effectively control the difficulties concomitant with Ergonomics – which is a maximum sensitivity in the design process.

Introduction
Over the years, engineers, scientists and ergonomists have extolled the conventional automobile screw jack (scissor jack) as being very efficient, but they continue to look for new designs to increase reliability and reduce its shortcomings and maintenance costs. Screw application is used when lifting vehicles or objects. The operation of the screw jack is such that it comprises a handle for manually actuating a screw element (lead screw) to adjust the height of the jack for lifting a vehicle or an object. Existing monkeys are a great disadvantage to elderly women, especially under unfavorable climatic conditions. A mechanical jack is a device that lifts heavy or heavy equipment and vehicles so that maintenance can be performed on the job site or in the manufacturing environment. A screw jack is a type of jack that works by turning a lead screw. It is commonly used to lift heavy loads to a height. A good example is car jacks. In case of a screw jack, a small force applied in the horizontal plane is used to raise or lower a large load. A good number of operational employees in manufacturing, bottling, oil and gas and other multinational companies perform tasks in a crouched or hunched position for an extended period. These result in inefficiency in the workplace due to the ergonomically unbalanced position they encounter, which often gives rise to back pain and poor body architecture in the future.

These currently available jacks still require the operator to remain in a prolonged stooped or crouched position to operate the jack. Due to its difficulties, body, back and other pains may arise as a result of continuously turning the key or crankshaft in an uncomfortable position for a long period. The problem formulation led to the motivation to design a modified quick-lift screw jack with gear arrangement. The introduction of the bevel gear will help reduce the difficulty of operating with a handle incorporated into the design and will also reduce the time spent to a minimum.

Selection of parts materials:
The choice of material is very important in the design of an automotive jack, as in the case of other engineering projects. It is one of the most important decisions a designer is asked to make.
The decision is usually made before the dimensions of the part are established. A very important factor in material selection is strength. Other factors include wear, corrosion, weight, noise, lubrication, marketability, manufacturability, safety, functionality, cost, etc. Some of those mentioned above have to do unwaveringly with the dimensions, material, processing and joining of the system element. For effective jack performance, carbon steel is mainly used due to its strength, toughness and low cost. It provides acceptable material properties for the application. Finally, the selected mild steel material provides reduced jack weight.
