Introduction

The scope of this project was to design and develop a coir extraction machine for farmers and small scale coir industries in India to provide an effective solution to the difficulties in the existing process, reduce labor time and cost work and develop a compact coconut fiber extraction machine that could be used in remote villages so that unused husks from these areas could be utilized and the fiber could be made available directly to the coconut fiber industry. This project was undertaken to develop a promotional strategy for a new innovation and generate public awareness about the availability of a coir extraction machine in the market at a reasonable cost.

The project began with collecting information and data about the user's lifestyle and the current process by which they perform their work. Current difficulties were analyzed. Interviews were carried out with users. A comparative benchmarking study was done on similar processes used in other similar extraction processes. Along with this, an ergonomic simulation was done to understand the user's difficulties and manufacturing methods to get an overview to provide a solution to the user to meet their needs.

Concepts were generated keeping the reference product in view. Five concepts were generated with different functions and operational processes for the coconut fiber extraction machine. The final concept was selected considering the operating environment and maintenance of users, which could be used in small-scale coir industries and the agricultural sector. Considering users' needs and purchasing capacity, a prototype was manufactured. This machine works with a gear mechanism, in which 2 barrels rotate in opposite directions to extract coconut fiber. Cutting pins are inserted into indexed holes to separate the fiber and give linear movement to the coconut shell.

Conclusion

The project comprises research and user study. The literature study is carried out based on existing patents on coconut fiber extraction machine, and it is observed that there are difficulties for remote villages to supply unused husks to coconut industries directly. Therefore, there is a need to give a solution to overcome their difficulties and arrive at a solution, importance is given to the operating environment of the users and especially constraints like Security, Function and reliability.
