Qual é a diferença entre as bicicletas com motor BS3 e BS4.

What is the difference between BS3 and BS4 engine bikes.

What is the difference between BS3 and BS4 engine bikes.

BS stands for Bharat Stage – 1,2,3,4

BS is related to the air pollution control norms set by the Indian government. The Indian government has decided permissible limits in percentages for various exhaust gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxides. This emission of gases dangerous to the environment.

POLUIÇÃO POLLUTION

All new vehicles manufactured after the implementation of the standards must comply with the regulations.

What is bullshit?

Bharat Stage Emission Standards are emission standards instituted by the Government of India to regulate the production of air pollutants from internal combustion engines and spark ignition engine equipment, including motor vehicles. The standards and implementation schedule are defined by the Central Pollution Control Board, under the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change.

The first BS-III rule was introduced in 2005 and was implemented in 15 cities in total and in 2010 the nationwide implementation of BS-III vehicles was completed.

BS-IV for 13 metro cities was introduced in April 2010 and the countrywide implementation is also now complete with the Supreme Court banning the sale of all BS-III vehicles from April 1, 2017.

Bs4 means a 'catalytic converter' is a mandatory addition to the exhaust system

The implementation of BS-IV across the country has been delayed due to lack of availability of BS-IV compliant fuel. Oil manufacturers had to make the necessary investment to manufacture 50 ppm ultra-low sulfur required to support BS-IV norms.

Furthermore, BS standards are based on European emissions standards which, for example, are referred to similarly as 'Euro 4' and 'Euro 6'. These standards are largely followed by all car manufacturers around the world and act as a good reference point on how much a vehicle pollutes.

To summarize and simplify, the Bharat Stage emission norms are largely similar to the European emission norms followed globally.

Why BS 4 is strictly applicable

India has some of the most polluted cities in the world and automobiles are often considered one of the biggest factors responsible for this. The need of the hour is to control pollution levels by all possible means and since globally countries are imposing Euro 6 levels of emission regulations, India needs to step up its game and hence the implication from BS III to BS IV emission standards.

Difference between BS3 and BS4/BS4 bike gears?

You may be wondering what exactly changes need to be made to the engine and exhaust system to meet the emission requirements as per bs4.

  • Bs4 cars require special BS4 compliant Bs4 diesel (containing low sulfur ie50ppm) while Bs3 cars can run on high sulfur (500 ppm) containing BS3 or BS4 compliant diesel.
  • Difference in emissions b/w bs3 and bs4

BS3

carbon monoxide 2.30 g/km

HC 0.20g/km

NOX 0.15g/km BS4

c carbon monoxide 1.00 g/km

HC 0.10 g/km

NOX 0.08g/km

These numbers clearly indicate that BS IV engines would reduce emissions by 80% and hats off to the authorities who took this bold step towards a better environment

  • The main change in BS IV is the control of evaporative emissions. In 2-wheeled vehicles, to comply with standards, bicycles must be equipped with carbon cans to control evaporative emissions. The fuel vapor contains a greater quantity of unburned hydrocarbons (extremely harmful to the environment). Thus, when the vehicle is parked, these vapors are formed. These escape during refueling and this must be limited as per BSIV standards.
  • Commercial vehicles are required to have EGR and SCR as per BS IV norms. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) converts NOx molecules into nitrogen and water.
