9 Types of Gear Mills: How Much Do You Know?

gear mill

Gear hob is a tool used to produce spur and helical tooth gears with exceptional precision. It can be used for various finishing processes such as pre-scraping and pre-grinding, and can accommodate different gear profiles, including those with convex corners, semi-top teeth and top cut.

Gear cutters can be produced in two types: with a hole or with a handle (rod type), and can have a single head or multiple heads. Accuracy grades typically range from A to AAA.

Additionally, cutters can be classified based on whether they are used for dry cutting or with coolant during the cutting process.

In terms of specifications, the range of cutter types includes holes and shanks, with a general modulus range of 0.25 to 33. The DP diameter control range is 0.75DP to 100 DP, and the diameter and maximum cutter lengths are 330 mm. and 380 mm, respectively.

Accuracy classes are determined based on DIN/GB standards and can range from A to AAA, with AAA being the highest accuracy class.

Spline involute milling cutter

Commonly used involute spline standards include: DIN 5480, DIN 5482, ANSI B92.1, B92.2, BS3550, GOST-6033, GBT3478 and others.

Parallel side flute cutters

Plate production follows a variety of standards including: DIN 5461, DIN 5462, DIN 5463, DIN 5464, DIN 5465, DIN 5471, DIN 5472, DIN 9611, ISO 14, UNI 220, UNI 221, UNI 8953 and GB/ T1144-2001, among others.

Application

Rectangular spline (GB/T1144-1987)

The spline connection is multi-tooth, with high load capacity, good centrality and orientation, shallow tooth root, less stress concentration and less weakening of shaft and hub strength. The series are specified in the standard: light series for static connection with light load and medium series for medium shear load. The tooth profile of the involute spline is involute, and there is radial force on the tooth when it is loaded, which can play the role of automatic centering, so that the force on each tooth is uniform, with high strength and long service life. The processing technology is the same as the gear, and it is easy to achieve high precision and interchangeability. standard pressure angleα 0 of involute spline: 30°, 37.5° and 45°.

It is widely used. Such as aircraft, automobiles, tractors, machine tool manufacturing, agricultural machinery and general mechanical transmission devices.

Involving spline (GB/T3478.1-1995)

It is used for connection with large load, high centering accuracy and large size.

Sprocket milling cutter

Milling cutters for use in the production of automotive and industrial roller chains are manufactured to a variety of non-standard patterns and shapes.

Overall sprocket pitch range: 76.2mm.

Standards: There are many ANSI, ASA, IS, DIN, JIS-B GB sprocket standards, many of which are counterfeit.

Helical Gear Mill

The most important type of worm plate is the worm type, including ZI, ZN, ZK and ZA.

Plates can have a single or multiple head and be produced with a hole or handle. The angle of attack for these plates typically ranges up to 45 degrees.

There are two methods of cutting with a milling cutter: tangential feed and radial feed.

Cutter with special tooth profile

Cutters with specialized tooth shapes can be used for various parts, as long as they are used for generating and processing external gears.

Straight tooth synchronous pulley cutter

The production of synchronous pulley cutters is used for a variety of belts and pulleys with involute and HTD profiles.

Top cut and no top cut designs are available. Common pulley models include wraparound profiles such as “T” and “S” as well as HTD, MXL, XL, L, H, XH and XXH.

Heavy duty double cutter

The production of specially designed double-cutting cutters decreases cutting time by incorporating special cutting edges into the grooves. These plates are specifically designed for gears with modulus 5.5 and higher.

Benefits:

Using specially designed dual cutting boards offers several benefits, including:

  • Significant reduction in cycle time
  • Easy implementation
  • Less plate wear

These cutters can be used with manual and CNC milling machines.

Dry cutting cutter

CNC gear milling machine uses this milling machine for high speed cutting to increase productivity.

The length of the cutting edge of this plate is extensive and has a large number of grooves.

This increases the life of the plate with just one grind.

It is ideal for use in large-scale automatic production lines.

To obtain the best results, it is recommended to follow the cutter specifications such as diameter, number of slots and heads and cutting parameters.

The objective is to minimize cutting time and maximize the life of the board.

Benefit :

  • Decreased cycle time
  • Greater number of parts sharpened per cycle
  • Reduced inventory
  • Fewer variables for perfect production
  • Increased factory capacity without additional investment in land, machines or labor
  • Reduced cost per component.

Application:

  • Dry and wet cutting options
  • Different types of holes and handles available
  • Single-threaded and multi-threaded options
  • Able to handle large parts, such as those used in two-wheeled vehicles, automobiles, gears, chain wheels, etc.
  • Simple to implement.
