What is foundation

The foundation is the structural element that transfers the load from the superstructure to the substructure, maintaining the stability of the entire structure.

Structures are subject to different types of loads , mainly vertical and horizontal loads. Inclined loads may also be present. Load application may depend on the type of load. Dead loads are loads applied continuously to the structure and live loads change from time to time.

Seismic loads are loads that occasionally act on a structure. The type of impact is also different. They result in vertical and horizontal movement of the structure over a shorter period of time.

All of these types of impacts must be able to be supported by the structure's foundation. These load applications must be examined by the designer before considering what a foundation is and what the function of the foundation is.

There are basically two types of foundations, namely shallow foundations and deep foundations.
