Types of cantilever foundations and their details

A cantilever foundation is a type of combined foundation that uses cantilever action to compensate for the eccentricity caused by the eccentricity of the column load.

The combined effect of the eccentric foundation (belt foundation), the brace support, and the internal column foundation or a structure designed to support the brace support is the combined substructure .

Due to the protrusion of the belt beam, this type of foundation is called a cantilever foundation.

What is the Canlitlever Foundation?

  • We cannot always size the column in the middle of an isolated foundation. If the building extends to the limit, the foundation cannot be built on the other property. In these cases we have to place the pillar on the edge of the foundation.
  • A load on the foundation at the edge leads to rotation at the center of the foundation. In other words, an eccentric load increases the stress in the soil at the location of the column.
  • If the permissible load capacity is exceeded, the foundation may settle or the soil may fail in its load capacity. The article on Shallow Foundation Failure can be used for other types of errors.
  • This is why we connect electrically loaded foundations to the internal structure via a beam in order to compensate or reduce stress concentrations at the edge of the foundation.
  • Due to the rotation caused by the eccentric load, the beam moves upward on the support. It behaves like a cantilever.
  • Therefore, these types of shallow foundations are called cantilever foundations. Furthermore, these types of foundations fall under Spreading .

Design of a cantilever foundation

The construction of the cantilever foundation is the same as that of the strip foundation.

In addition to the bending stresses caused by vertical loads in the ultimate limit state, we must consider the bending and shear forces caused by the eccentric load.

The procedure to follow in the project is explained in the last part of the article. Strap foot . More information and working examples can be found in another article.

Important aspects of self-sustaining foundations

  • Why you need it: Do we always have to connect the electrically charged foundation base to an internal column with belt support? The answer is no. Foundation bases can be eccentrically designed. Foundation bases can be designed for this. However, there are certain procedures that must be followed by the planner.
  • Avoid eccentricity of the load through new supports on the ground floor: There are some modifications that can be made to avoid eccentricity of the foundation. One option is to move the pillar that forms the foundation toward the center of the foundation and build a floating pillar on the floor beam at the edge of the boundary.
  • Beam Projection : We can project the column in the middle of the foundation and cantilever the beam toward the edge at each floor level to expand the building.
  • Construction: Construction of cantilever foundation requires a lot of effort where there are weak soil layers. Soil improvement should be done in accordance with the recommendations in the soil analysis report. Furthermore, attention should be paid to the following: Soil types and the fact that there are expansive soils can pose numerous problems in planning and construction.
