Co2 Molding Process – Advantages and Application

CO2 Molding

Introduction:

CO2 casting is a type of sand casting process. In this process, the sand molding mixture is hardened by blowing gas over the mold. This process is favored by amateur metal casters because a lot of cost cutting can be done. Furthermore, one can be sure of obtaining dimensionally accurate castings with fine surface finishing. But, this process is not economical than green sand casting process.

Process:

The CO2 Casting Mold is made from a mixture of sand and liquid silicate binder that is hardened by passing CO2 gas over the mold. The molding process equipment includes a CO2 cylinder, regulator, hoses and manual applicator gun or nozzle. Carbon dioxide molding offers great precision in production. Any existing pattern can be used for molding purposes and can be placed in the mold before the mold is hardened. This method helps in producing strong molds and cores that can be used for high-end applications. If the process is carried out carefully, the casting can be as accurate as that produced by the shell casting method.

Carbon dioxide casting is preferred by both commercial and amateur casters for a number of reasons. In commercial operations, foundries can guarantee customers affordable castings that require less machining. The molding process that can be fully automated is generally used for casting processes that require speed, high production and flexibility. In domestic foundries this is one of the simplest processes that improves the quality of the casting.

CO2 Molding Applications:

The CO2 casting process is ideal where speed and flexibility are the main requirements. Molds and cores of varying sizes and shapes can be molded by this process.

Advantages of Co2 molding:

This process has many advantages compared to other forms of castings, some of them are as follows:
The. Compared to other casting methods, the cores and molds are strong
B. Reduces fuel cost as gas is used instead of other expensive heating generating elements
w. Reduces the large number of mold boxes and core dryers required
d. Offers great dimensional tolerance and production precision
It is. Moisture is completely eliminated from the molding sand
f. This process can be fully automated.
