AutoCAD is used in a wide variety of sectors, by architects, project managers, engineers, designers and different professionals. Revit software is primarily designed for structural engineers, architects, designers, MEP engineers and contractors. It's more flexible because you have all of AutoCAD's surface, mesh, and solid commands. Revit is more rigid; you must do things correctly in terms of construction as you are building not only a 3D model but also a model that allows you to coordinate work and much more. AutoCAD is considered best for 2D drafting, i.e. where only precise line work is required, such as detailed elevation drawings. Revit is considered best for modeling, generating cost schedules, collaboration, and change management.
