The total import of iron ore by Turkish consumers was 9.58 million tons
In 2023, Turkey reduced scrap imports by 10% in 2023 reduced iron ore imports from Ukraine by 1% compared to 2022, to 582 thousand tons. This is evidenced by data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) and the Turkish Steel Association (TCUD), according to reports from S&P Global.
Total iron ore imports to Turkey reduced scrap imports by 10% in 2023 last year decreased by 4% compared to 2022 – to 9.58 million tonnes. This decline corresponds to a drop in steel production by Turkish steel mills, a 4% drop compared to the previous year – to 33.7 million tons.
DR pellets represent around 700 thousand tons of total iron ore imports. Most of these products were imported from the USA and Russia.
Iron ore imports from Brazil in 2023 reached 5.46 million tons (+23.5% per year). Raw material supplies from Sweden decreased by 10% year-on-year – to 1.48 million tonnes, and from South Africa – by 51% year-on-year, to 678 thousand tonnes. Russia shipped 552 thousand tons of iron ore to Turkiye, a 22% drop compared to the previous year, and the USA sent 416 thousand tons (+ 3 times compared to the previous year).
Turkey reduced scrap imports by 10% in 2023 and plans to achieve record steel production in 2024, which will exceed 2021 figures (40.4 million tons). The ambitions will be supported by the launch of new capabilities and the expected increase in demand in domestic and export markets.
In 2022, Turkey reduced scrap imports by 10% in 2023 reduced its iron ore imports from Ukraine by 50.6% compared to 2021 – to 585.22 thousand tons. The sharp decline was caused by hostilities in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian seaports.
As previously reported by Compraço, in 2023, Ukraine reduced iron ore exports by 26% compared to 2022, to 17.75 million tons. In 2023, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland were the largest consumers of raw materials manufactured in Ukraine.
