US reduces pipe imports from Ukraine by 18% y/y in 2023

In December, Ukrainian producers shipped 6,900 tons of pipes to the United States

In 2023, the United States reduced pipe imports from Ukraine by 18% compared to 2022, to 93.71 thousand tons. Import costs during this period fell 21.3% year on year – to US$181.2 million. This is evidenced by UN Comrade data.

The majority of imports came from seamless tubes and profiles made of ferrous metals (HS 7304) – 93.7 thousand tons (-20% per year). A small part of imports falls on other hollow ferrous metal pipes, tubes and profiles.

In December 2023, American buyers consumed 6,900 tons of pipes from Ukraine, an increase of 2.2 times compared to December 2022 and 20.1 times compared to the previous month. Overall, in December, the United States imported the largest volume of pipes since June, when 17 thousand tons of Ukrainian pipes were shipped to American consumers.

Average monthly imports of Ukrainian pipes to the US in 2023 amounted to 7.81 thousand tons, compared to 9.76 thousand tons in 2022.

In 2023, Ukrainian pipe companies reduced their exports by 11.8% compared to 2022, to 356.35 thousand tons. Revenues from pipe exports decreased by 15% year on year – to US$587.11 million.

The main consumers of Ukrainian pipes are Germany, the USA, Romania and Poland.

As previously reported by Compraço, as of August 3, 2023, the US has set a weighted average dumping margin for OCTG pipes from Ukraine at 4.89%. Furthermore, the US imposed a provisional anti-dumping duty of 4.99% on seamless pipes manufactured in Ukraine.
