Ukrainian railways increase track repairs by 20% y/y in 2023

During the year, 1,308.3 km of roads were updated with various types of repairs

In 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the volume of track repairs by 19.6% compared to 2022, to 1,308.3 km. This is stated in the railway operator's press release .

In particular, 495.6 km of roads were restored by overhaul, which is 5.7% more than in 2022, and 812.7 km of roads were repaired with average repairs (+30% y/y).

Additionally, 284 turnout sets were renovated last year. A total of 690 turnout sets were renovated with medium repairs. Furthermore, in 2023, the UZ restored 6.6 km of roads and 30 artificial structures damaged as a result of hostilities.

In 2024, the railway operator plans to renew 1,197.5 km of tracks with various types of repairs.

Last year, the company also carried out routine repairs on almost 8 thousand km of overhead catenary on the tracks and branches of the main station. In the traction substations, 18 transformers were renovated and 31 current and voltage transformers were replaced.

As previously reported, Ukrainian Railways built 528 freight cars at its own facilities in 2023, which is a record for the last five years. In particular, 427 assembly platforms were produced last year.

The company's plans for 2024 include, in particular, a 15% increase in the volume of major locomotive overhauls at the Ukrainian Railways factory facilities, an 8% increase in electric trains and the development of new products and technologies.

Last year, UZ reduced the transport of iron ore and manganese by 13.2% compared to 2022 – up to 27.5 million tons. The transportation of steel products last year was 8.2 million tons, which is 10.6% less than in 2022. In general, the rail transportation of steel products was 35.7 million tons, which represents 24% of total transport volume in 2023.
