The same applies to structural analysis and construction, where reinforcement detailing is of great importance to meet design and construction requirements.
These are not design requirements that we must consider when detailing the armor. There are special design requirements that must be taken into account. In addition to the armor detailing rules, the condition of the other elements must also be taken into account, as retail is more complex.
For example, when detailing a long span beam or a section with a large area of reinforcement that connects the planned reinforced column, we need to consider the layout of the column reinforcement to ensure our details can be executed on site.
With this note we want to see what detailed rules need to be followed according to Eurocode 2. We discuss beam reinforcement detailing according to Eurocode 2 or EC2
Minimum area or reinforcement
tension rods
A s min ≥ 0.26 (f CTM /F Sim )B T d > 0.0013b T D
Where,
F CTM can be found in Table 3.1 of Eurocode 2
Compression reinforcement
A s min ≥0.002A C
Transverse reinforcement
A s min ≥ 0.0015h F i
Here “ I ” is the range
Reinforcing bar spacing
Minimum spacing between bars
- 75 mm, leaving enough space to insert the poker vibrator
- 100mm for rod pairs
Maximum spacing between bars – tension bars
The following table from Eurocode 2 gives the spacing of reinforcing bars based on the crack width and the operating stress of the reinforcing bars. Unless otherwise stated, the operating stress of the armature can be assumed to be 310 MPa.
Maximum spacing between bars to control cracks
Maximum spacing between bars – compression bars
- 300mm
- All compression rods are fixed at a distance of 150 mm. If not, we will provide the link.
Supportive side reinforcements
- Side reinforcements are provided if the beam height is equal to or greater than 1000 mm; h ≥ 1000mm
- The reinforcing steel must be placed between the tension surface and the neutral axis. This means that approximately half the height of the tensioned surface must be reinforced as lateral reinforcement.
- For crack control, 16mm thick rebar may be provided at a spacing of not more than 250mm as suggested in the Structural Concrete Detailing Method.
- Alternatively, we can follow clause 7.3.3(3) of BS EN 1992-1-1:2004 to calculate the beam lateral reinforcement requirement based on crack control requirements.
Beam Shear Connections
Minimum requirements
A sw /sb i ≥ 0.085%
Where,
A sw – Cross-sectional area of the two connecting legs
b i – Average section width
S – spacing of connecting links (≤ 15° from the main compression bar)
Recommended minimum link diameter is 8.0 mm
Minimum distance for links
100 mm or (50 + 12.5 (number of legs)), whichever is greater.
Maximum link distance
300mm or 0.75d or 12 times the rod diameter, whichever is smaller.
Maximum lateral distance between links
600mm or 0.75d
The distance between the compression and tension rods of the vatic leg should not be more than 150 mm
