Maximum reinforcement area

The maximum reinforcement area can be found in Section 3.12.6. Reinforcement ratings for columns, walls and beams are given there. These relationships must be used with the detailing rules that govern reinforcement spacing and overlap.

Pub
The maximum allowable area of reinforcement is 4% by tensile and compressive force of its cross-sectional area.

columns
Depending on the casting process and reinforcement overlap, different reinforcement ratios (for longitudinal direction) can be seen in BS 8110 Part 01 1997.

  1. Vertically cast supports – 6%
  2. Horizontally fused columns – 8%
  3. For overlaps in both types of columns – 10%

walls

The area of the vertical reinforcement must not exceed 4% of its transversal area.
