Voltage converters, also called voltage transformers or instrument transformers, measure voltage in an electrical network. They have many primary turns and fewer secondary turns and are used to control a large value of voltage.

TO WORK

The potential transformer is connected in parallel to the circuit to be monitored. The potential transformer works on the same principle as many transformers. It converts voltages from high to low. It uses thousands of volts behind power transmission systems and reduces the voltage to a measurable value. The primary winding can also be connected to ground or phase to phase. The secondary winding is usually grounded to one terminal. These transformers work for both single-phase and three-phase systems and are connected to a point where the voltage can be conveniently measured.

There are three primary voltage transformers (PT): magnetic force (electromagnet), capacitor and optical. The magnetic force voltage transformer may be a wire-wound transformer. The electrical capacitor potential transformer uses a capacitive resistance associated with higher voltages because it costs less than a magnetic force potential transformer. An optical potential transformer exploits the electrical properties of optical materials.
