STMicroelectronics has released single-channel versions of its high-end programmable switches, the IPS1025H and IPS1025H-32. With integrated protection against undervoltage, overvoltage, overload and overtemperature, they allow the intelligent activation of capacitive, resistive or inductive loads — which consume high startup current.
The internally programmed current limit differentiates between IPS1025H and IPS1025H-32. The IPS1025H limit is 2.5A and it is 5.7A on the IPS1025H-32. In addition to the primary current limit, each switch has a user-programmable secondary limit to handle capacitive loads with high initial startup current. The threshold value and duration are set using external resistors and a capacitor.
Featuring a wide input and supply voltage range from 8 to 60 V and capable of withstanding up to 65 V at the input pin, the compact devices ensure reliable performance in industrial applications. Typical uses for the IPS1025H include driving loads controlled by PLC modules and for use in factory automation equipment such as I/O peripherals and CNC machines.
The IPS1025H-32, with its higher maximum current limit, is suitable for use with unidirectional motors in equipment such as vending machines.
The integrated MOSFET switch has low Rds(on) (≤ 25 mΩ up to TJ = 125 °C), resulting in high energy efficiency and low thermal dissipation. With single-pulse avalanche energy greater than 1J at 2A, the MOSFET increases reliability in handling inductive loads. An integrated active clamp provides fast demagnetization.
ST's new programmable switches feature extensive built-in protection and diagnostics, which improve safety and reliability when dealing with undervoltage, overvoltage, overload, short circuit, grounding or power rail disconnection. Individual fault signaling indicates overload and overtemperature events at the junction.
An additional sensor is provided to protect against housing overheating. The switches meet IEC 61000-4-2 ESD, IEC 61000-4-4, and IEC 61000-4-5 specifications for ESD, fast transients, and surge immunity.
Demo boards and software are available for quick evaluation. Boards include X-NUCLEO-OUT05A1 and X-NUCLEO-OUT06A1 digital output expansion boards for use with STM32 Nucleo development boards, plus software drivers associated with the X-CUBE-OUT5 software package that extend the functionality provided by STM32. Source code for a graphical user interface (STSW-IFAPGUI) is also available, which helps users realize a complete industrial automation environment on the desktop.
