Industrial control systems must have a minimum error rate, especially in harsh environments, which makes safe system development crucial. Infineon Technologies' AURIX TC3x and TRAVEO T2G microcontroller product families meet these requirements with a wide range of integrated hardware functional safety and cybersecurity features.
Both product families have expanded their support for IEC 61508 hardware and software metrics, including all necessary documentation for functional safety certification.
Additionally, Infineon's AUTOSAR Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL) low-level driver software product also supports IEC 61508 metrics.
In addition to its successful deployment in the mobility market, Infineon's AUTOSAR MCAL enables numerous other functional safety applications, including medical devices, industrial drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), robotics, indoor applications such as elevators or machines.
“With the AUTOSAR standard being used outside of automotive applications, we now support our customers by providing suitable AUTOSAR MCAL software documentation that supports IEC 61508 metrics,” said Ralf Koedel, vice president of microcontrollers at Infineon. “The demand for minimal errors in harsh environments has strengthened the requirements for industrial control systems. With the AURIX and TRAVEO families' extended support for IEC 61508 metrics, however, developers can rely on a series of proven microcontrollers to design safety-critical applications and rely on the available diagnostic analysis documentation (FMEDA and safety manual).
Documenting the effects of failure modes and FMEDA provides a static snapshot showing IEC 61508 failure rates and safety metrics calculated at the MCU and basic function levels. By extending support of AURIX TC3x and TRAVEO T2G microcontrollers from ISO26262 metrics to IEC61508, developers can achieve SIL-1-3 for their industrial applications.
Additionally, Infineon has built a strong ecosystem of design partners to pave the way for safety-critical projects up to SIL-4 and offers reliable support for functional safety certification.
