Dealing with legacy technology in digital acceleration

Believe it or not, the modern philosophy of integrated systems, extensive documentation, and readable code didn't always exist,

The risks and possible consequences of something going wrong

Again, there is no straight answer. You may be determined to maintain your current infrastructure only to discover, mid-development, that there is no way to move forward without updating it.

Remember that a system is only as slow as the slowest part, so it doesn't matter if you hire a front-end developer to create the best application in the world if the back-end is run by a server with the power of a potato .

Be critical and smart

Let me send you another story. Another friend of mine teaches at a college that kept piling up computer upgrades, to the point where the older PCs were running Windows XP and most of them were stuck on Windows 7.

They seemed perfectly content, as the faculty only had to check emails and write reports. That was until the pandemic hit and they had to move faculty meetings to Zoom, which simply refused to work on older computers. Suddenly, the backlog of these updates backfired spectacularly.

If your first impulse when you software developer brings the topic of legacy technology to the table is to maintain your current infrastructure, that's perfectly acceptable, but I recommend that you think carefully before committing to a choice. The longer you cling to legacy hardware or software, the more expensive it will be in the long run.
