Diodes Incorporated, in response to the rapidly growing opportunities in pre-installed USB charging in vehicles, announced a highly integrated dual-channel USB Type-C protocol decoder.
The DIODES AP43776Q supports USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.1 Standard Power Range (SPR), Programmable Power Supply (PPS), and Quick Charge QC5 fast charging protocols. It also supports legacy battery charging (BC) 1.2 and is highly optimized for multi-port automotive USB device charging systems.
The AP43776Q has an integrated microcontroller unit (MCU) with 12kB of single programmable ROM (OTP), as well as a multi-time programmable ROM (MTP) resource tool. Each PD 3.1 port is fully PPS compatible, featuring an output voltage range of 3.3 to 21 V with 20 mV/step and 50 mA/step adjustment. This allows for independent load output voltages for greater power usage and optimization.
An I2C interface allows inter-chip communication with controllers and DC-DC converters in the charging system. This simplifies the control loop and reduces overall component costs. Using the UART interface, two separate AP43776Q devices can be interconnected, so that intelligent power sharing can be realized across all four USB ports combined.
In addition to managing the power negotiation connection procedure, the AP43776Q enables DisplayPort over USB-C by detecting the USB Type-C alternate mode and triggering an appropriate USB/DP mux – making it easy to transport video data over the system's USB connection.
