upcoming 5G wireless technology. This fifth generation for mobile networks is packed with power, especially in terms of speed and reduced latency. It's hard not to get excited about this because it would mean a huge leap forward in terms of mobile capabilities.

The mention of 5G is not gratuitous. When the 2010s were just beginning, we were all waiting for the first 4G LTE devices to hit the market. The promises were practically the same as for 5G. And when we got our hands on the first smartphones that supported it, we saw that the promises were all true. 4G LTE-enabled mobile streaming, real-time apps and hotspot tethering. It loaded web pages, downloaded music, and sent images extremely fast.

I could say that the arrival of 4G LTE was fundamental for the smartphone to become the resounding success that it would become. Without this generation of mobile networking, we might not be as interested in interacting with our phones. Technology has taken the mobile experience to a new level and since its popularization, we have never looked back.

Some final words

After this explanation, you may think that the cliché I used in the first paragraph is not far from the truth. Life is radically different than it was just 10 years ago – and you can thank (or blame) all these technologies for that.

It's true that there are some important trends that I left out of this article. The launch of new social media platforms has changed our online discourse and impacted our society on a political level. Tesla's irruption into the automobile industry brought us electric and autonomous cars. Even AirPods were a hit and launched a smart headphone craze that changed the way we listen to music.

However, the essentials are covered here. All these technologies show that changes, whether small or colossal, are always around the corner. This is a possibility that feels both exciting and scary. We can't be sure what's going on with an unknown startup and its pilots, but it's likely that the technologies that will reshape our society during the 2020s are already in development. Would we be up to the challenges they will bring us?
