Abaqus Analysis Software – Application and Process

Abaqus FEA (formerly ABAQUS) is a software suite for finite element analysis and computer-aided engineering, originally released in 1978. This software's name and logo are based on the abacus calculation tool.

The Abaqus product suite consists of five main software products:

  • Abaqus/CAE, or “Complete Abaqus Environment” (a backronym with an obvious root in Computer Aided Engineering). It is software used both for modeling and analysis of mechanical components and assemblies (pre-processing) and for visualizing the results of finite element analysis. A subset of Abaqus/CAE including only the post-processing module can be started independently in the Abaqus/Viewer product.
  • Abaqus/Standard is a general-purpose finite element analyzer that employs an implicit (traditional) integration scheme.
  • Abaqus/Explicit, a special-purpose finite element analyzer that employs explicit integration scheme to solve highly nonlinear systems with many complex contacts under transient loads.Abaqus/CFD, a computational fluid dynamics software application that provides advanced computational fluid dynamics with extensive support for pre-processing and post-processing provided in Abaqus/CAE.
  • Abaqus/Electromagnetic a computational electromagnetic software application that solves advanced computational electromagnetic problems.

Abaqus software application:

Abaqus is used in the automotive, aerospace and industrial products industries. The product is popular among non-academic and engineering research institutions due to the program's extensive material modeling capabilities and customization capabilities, for example, users can define their own material models so that new materials can also be simulated in the Abaqus. Abaqus also provides a good collection of multiphysics features such as coupled acoustic-structural, piezoelectric, and structural pore features, making it attractive for production-level simulations where multiple fields need to be coupled.

Abaqus was initially designed to address nonlinear physical behavior; As a result, packaging has a wide range of material models, such as elastomeric (rubber-like) and hyperelastic (soft tissue) material capabilities.

Steps in Abaqus software:

Each full finite element analysis consists of 3 separate stages:

  • Preprocessing or modeling: This step involves creating an input file that contains an engineer's design for a finite element analyzer (also called a “solver”).
  • Finite element processing or analysis: This stage produces a visual output file.
  • Post-processing or generation of report, image, animation, etc. from output file : This stage is a visual rendering stage.
Abaqus/CAE is capable of pre-processing, post-processing and monitoring the solver processing stage; however, the first step can also be done by other compatible CAD software, or even by a text editor. Abaqus/Standard, Abaqus/Explicit or Abaqus/CFD are capable of performing the processing step. Dassault Systemes also produces Abaqus for CATIA to add advanced processing and post-processing stages to a preprocessor like CATIA.
