Goal:
To design and manufacture pneumatic base plate cutting machine to be used to cut minimum thickness plates without hard manual labor, instead we use pneumatic control system to operate the cutting machine accurately. This machine can also be installed in the laboratory for experiment and demonstration for engineering students. Thus gaining experience and knowledge on how to design and manufacture the mechanical system.
Introduction:
The sheet metal cutting process is an important part of every industry. Normally, the sheet metal cutting machine is operated manually. One for medium and small industries. Automation in the modern world is inevitable.
Any automatic machine intended for the economic use of man, machine and material is worth more. In our project, solenoid valve and control timing unit for automation are used.
Working principle
The sheet metal cutting machine works with the help of a double-acting pneumatic cylinder. The piston is connected to the movable cutting tool. It is used to cut small size sheets.
The machine is portable and easy to carry.
Compressed air from the compressor is used as the power medium for this operation. There are double acting pneumatic cylinder solenoid valves, flow control valve and timer unit is used. The compressor arm enters the flow control valve. Controlled air from the flow control valve enters the solenoid valve. The solenoid valves function throughout the correct air time range. 5/2 solenoid valve is used.
In one position the air enters the cylinder and pushes the piston so that the cutting stroke is obtained. In the next position, air enters the other side of the cylinder and pushes the piston return back so that the release stroke is obtained. The speed of the cutting and releasing stroke varies depending on the timer control unit circuit.
Component Description:
1) Air compressor:
An air compressor is a device that converts energy (usually from an electric motor, diesel engine or gasoline engine) into kinetic energy, compressing and pressurizing air.
2) Pneumatic Cylinder:
Pneumatic cylinder (sometimes known as air cylinder) is a mechanical device that uses the power of compressed gas to produce a force in a reciprocating linear motion.
3) Solenoid Valve
A solenoid valve is an electromagnetically operated valve. The valve is controlled by electric current through a solenoid: in the case of a two-way valve the flow is turned on or off; In the case of a three-port valve, the flow is alternated between the two outlet ports. Several solenoid valves can be placed together in a manifold.
Solenoid valves are the most frequently used control elements in fluidics . Their tasks are to disconnect, release, dose, distribute or mix fluids. They are found in many areas of application. The solenoids offer fast and safe switching, high reliability, long service life, good average compatibility of the materials used, low control power and compact design.
