Stainless steel blasting: characteristics and practical applications

What is sandblasting technology?

Many stainless steel diamond treatments use stainless steel sandblasting technology. What is sandblasting technology?

Sandblasting technology uses compressed air as force to form the most adjusted spray, which will spray the material at high speed onto the surface of the part that needs to be treated, like this:

① Improve the mechanical properties of the part surface;

② Leave the surface of the piece clean and with different roughness;

③ Change the appearance or shape of the outer surface of the workpiece surface. Due to the impact and cutting effect of the abrasive on the surface of the workpiece, the fatigue resistance is improved and the adhesion between the coating and the sandblasting is increased, making the coating more durable and the surface flatness and decorative effect better.

Features of stainless steel blasting technology

Compared with other cleaning methods, the stainless steel blasting technology used for processing has the following characteristics:

  • Sandblasting is the most complete, universal and efficient cleaning method, with the highest operating speed.
  • Sandblasting can select any roughness between different levels, while other methods cannot achieve this. Hand polishing can create a matte surface, but it is very slow, and cleaning with a chemical solvent does not help the coating adhere to smooth surfaces.

Applications of stainless steel blasting technology

Stainless steel blasting technology has the following applications:

  • Removing burrs and beautifying the surface of machined parts.
    Sandblasting can remove small burrs on the surface of workpieces, making them smoother and eliminating potential scratches, thus improving the level of workpieces. Furthermore, sandblasting can create small rounded corners at the joint surface of the part, making it more beautiful and precise.
  • Improving the mechanical properties of parts.
    After sandblasting treatment, mechanical parts can produce a uniformly fine concave-convex surface (basic pattern) on the surface of the workpiece, which can store lubricants, improve lubrication conditions, reduce noise and extend service life of the machinery.
  • Surface polishing.
  • Pre-treatment of parts for coating and gluing.
    Sandblasting can remove all kinds of impurities such as rust on the surface of the workpiece and establish a very important basic pattern (often called matte surface). By changing different sizes of abrasive particles, different degrees of roughness can be achieved, greatly improving the adhesion between the part and the coating or galvanization, or making the connection firmer and of higher quality.
  • Cleaning and polishing of castings and forgings and parts after heat treatment.
    Sandblasting can remove all impurities (such as oxide scale and stains) on the surface of castings, forgings and workpieces after heat treatment, and polish the surface of the workpiece to improve its smoothness, thereby beautifying the workpiece of work. Sandblasting can also make the piece have a uniform metallic color, making the appearance of the piece more beautiful and achieving the purpose of beautifying and decorating.
