Guide to SKF bearing abbreviations: suffixes, designs and variants

The SKF bearing suffix identifies designs or variants that differ in some way from the original or current basic design. Suffixes are divided into groups. When more than one special function needs to be identified, the suffixes are given in the order shown in the following table.

M Machined brass cage, centered on the sphere; Different designs or material qualities are identified by a number after the M, for example M2
BUT (S) Machined brass cage, centered on the outer ring. The “S” indicates a lubrication groove in the surface of the guide.
MB (S) Machined brass cage, centered on the inner ring. The “S” indicates a lubrication groove in the surface of the guide.

Sun Universal fit bearing. Two bearings arranged against each other or opposite each other have axial internal clearance.

GB Universal fit bearing. Two bearings arranged back to back or face to face have moderate preload.
