Milling on sheet steel is an important process for many materials. What you should pay special attention to when milling steel , which tools are suitable and what problems can exist with steel , you will learn in detail in this post.
MILLING
Milling is one of the machining methods that are regulated in the DIN 8589 standard. In addition to milling, turning, drilling, sawing and grinding, they also represent machining operations on sheet steel .
When milling steel sheets , chips are removed from the material, which is usually done by machines (milling machine, CNC milling machine, machining centers).
Compraço sells A36 and SAE 1020 Steel. See our product line.
requirements for milling
In order to successfully perform this machining on a steel sheet , certain material properties must be provided. Steel generally does not have the necessary properties or only to a limited extent. This leads to numerous problems when trying to mill steel . In general, for metals (especially steel ) tools specially designed for milling on milling machines or machining centers should be used.
DIFFERENCES IN THE SUITABILITY OF STEEL MILLING
Whether steel has good machinability depends on several factors. The most important are:
- the respective alloy steel (recognizable by the material code, e.g. A36 ) and the alloy composition
- the carbon content of steel
- the hardness of a steel
- the way of making the steel part (by forging, casting, etc.)
PROBLEMS WITH SOFT STEEL CLASSES
Particularly soft steels, especially low carbon steels, are hardly manageable during milling . During milling you have to work extremely carefully.
HARD STEEL PROBLEMS
Withharder steel grades , however, so-called surges can occur quickly if the milling tool is not in an optimal position.
WORK SPEEDS
Especially in industrial processes, machining speed plays an essential role in machining efficiency. For single machines, differences in processing speed vary greatly depending on the type of steel . They can move between 20 and 300 meters per minute, which often makes it difficult to calculate costs. High-tech systems can reach up to 10,000 meters per minute by optimizing the specific steel material and its special properties.
TIPS AND TRICKS
It can therefore be remembered as a rule of thumb: Low carbon steels are generally well weldable, but for machining operations such as milling, on the other hand, very unsuitable and extremely troublesome to work with. These problems often appear during drilling.
