Helical Gear – Advantages, Disadvantages and Application

Helical gears

Unlike spur gears, helical gears and helical gearbox both have the ability to conduct smooth operation. The teeth of a helical gear cut at an angle to the gear face. Thus, during the process, when two of the teeth begin to engage, the contact is gradual – starting at one end of the tooth and maintaining contact as the gear rotates until full engagement. When it comes to transmissions, helical gear is the most used gear and still generates large amounts of thrust.

Advantages of helical gear

  • As we discussed in our previous post, in case of worm gear, the engagement of the worm gear teeth will be gradual and the engagement will start at one end of a worm gear tooth with the other corresponding worm gear tooth and will spread continuously throughout the tooth. as the gear rotates. This gradual engagement of the worm gear will provide quiet, smooth operation.
  • Helical gears are preferred for heavy load applications
  • Helical gears can be used to transmit motion and power between two parallel shafts and also between two non-parallel shafts.
  • Helical gears will have more capacity to transmit load between two parallel shafts compared to similar modules and equivalent width of spur gears.
  • There will be less wear in case of helical gears during operation as compared to wear in case of spur gears operation because if we consider the operation of helical gears then the load will be distributed among multiple teeth at any time and that is why there will be less wear in the operation of helical gears.
  • Disadvantages of helical gear

  • When a pair of helical gears mesh with each other, there will be creation of axial load on the gear due to the helix angle of the gear teeth and therefore the gearbox designer must select bearings that are capable of absorbing and supporting this axial load.
  • There will be sliding movement between the corresponding gear teeth in case of helical gear and heat generation will be more as compared to spur gear application. Therefore, the helical gear requires good lubrication quality.
  • A pair of matching helical gears will have less efficiency compared to the efficiency of matching spur gears of similar size.
  • The power loss in case of helical gear train operation will be higher compared to spur gear train operation.
  • The manufacturing and designing cost of helical gears will be higher compared to the designing and manufacturing cost of spur gears.
