Rust on sheet steel is always a very unpleasant thing. What types of steel can it occur with, what possibilities exist to avoid it and how to combat rust in steel , you can read in this article.
Rust formation in steel
Rust is a problem that can occur with all ferrous metals - including sheet steel . When oxygen and water come in contact with a ferrous metal surface, corrosion occurs. Non-ferrous metals (such as aluminum) do not rust.
stainless steel rust
Stainless steel is generally considered non-corrosive. This is only partially true. Indeed stainless steel is a type of steel with a chromium content of more than 10.5%. Stainless steel is just the name for steels with a special degree of purity. It can also rust if the chromium content is too low or not available in the material.
The higher the proportion of chromium in the alloy and the more corrosion protection alloy constituents present, the better the corrosion resistance. These alloy components are
- nickel
- molybdenum
- manganese and
- niobium
Another cause could be stainless steel coming into contact with other particles. Especially outdoors, salt and salt air is sometimes a problem for many less high grade steels .
prevent corrosion
Whenever possible, mechanical methods such as sanding and blasting are preferable to all other methods. After mechanical removal of visible rust treatment .
TIPS AND TRICKS
Regular cleaning and care of metal surfaces is also an important protective measure.
