Roller chains: how to keep machines moving

Roller chains in mobile machines

Roller chains offer a simple and efficient solution for transmitting power and coupling a motor to its load. They are used in several types of common machines, from the most domestic, such as cars, motorcycles and bicycles, to large industrial and agricultural applications, such as printing machines and conveyor belts.

How do they work?

The construction of a roller chain is quite simple and features a series of chain links connected by side links (inner and outer links). A sprocket, called a sprocket, connects the chain to the engine and sets it in motion. The roller chain design helps reduce friction during movement, making it more efficient and less prone to wear and fatigue.

Extend the life of your roller chain

Lubricant is the main solution to combat corrosion, wear and fatigue, the most common reasons for roller chain failure. Keeping roller chains continually lubricated will ensure they are protected from contamination, which can reduce product life. In particularly dirty applications such as agricultural machinery, motorcycles, chainsaws and bicycles, correct and frequent lubrication is essential. It is also important to use the correct lubricant. Some oil-based products attract dirt, causing a build-up of thick grease and grime that increases wear and fatigue. Using a “dry” lubricant spray is the best option.

Signs of roller chain failure

When a roller chain reaches the end of its useful life, the pitch between the links begins to increase, causing the chain to stretch. It is not the metal that stretches, but rather the pivot pins and bushings that wear out. This causes the chain to no longer fit properly onto the sprocket and will be evident through a loud noise or vibration. The general rule of thumb is that when a chain becomes between 1.5% and 2% longer than its original length, it is time to consider replacing the chain and sprockets.

Tensile and fatigue strength

To determine how strong and durable a roller chain is, we consider its tensile and fatigue strength. Tensile strength measures the weight or load a roller chain can withstand before breaking, while fatigue strength measures the quality of the way the chain was manufactured, testing the steel, its heat treatment, fabrication of the connecting plate and of the different elements of the chain.
