How to choose your V-belt

How to choose V belt

To be able to choose yours correctly and uniquely V-Belt … the simplest step to take is to read the manufacturer's instructions , where instructions on the model and/or technical characteristics of the belt will also be provided. However, in addition to this convenient shortcut, it may be useful to familiarize yourself with V-belts, understanding what their specificities may be.

How can V-belts be

Let's start by remembering that V-belts can be smooth or serrated , classic or narrow . Classics are usually measured in inches, while narrows are predominantly measured in millimeters for better accuracy.

How to recognize a smooth or toothed V belt

Recognizing whether a V-belt is smooth or toothed is very simple, as all you need to do is take a look at its internal surface: if there are small teeth, mainly intended to ensure better bending and flexibility, the belt is toothed; however, if the belt has no teeth on its inner surface, it is called a smooth V-belt.

How to distinguish the size of a V-belt

As well as internal surface composition (smooth or toothed), V-belts can also be classified based on their width and height. Once we correctly detect the width and height of the V-belt, we can also easily identify its section.

In detail, when we talk about V-belt length , it usually means its development, expressed in millimeters or inches. In the case of V-belts in inches, smooth or serrated, the measurements on the back of the belt will be relative to the internal development, expressed in inches. On the other hand, in the case of metric V-belts, with a length expressed in millimeters, smooth or toothed, the measurements indicated on the back of the belt will be relative to the length expressed – precisely – in millimeters.

How to calculate belt length

If you cannot read the belt code , perhaps because it is too worn, it is still possible to calculate the length of the belt by measuring it manually and calculating its development using conversion tables. In particular, for classic V-belts the internal development is usually indicated as the standard reference, while for narrow belts, with the prefix SP, the primitive development is usually indicated.

Having clarified this, to know exactly the length of a belt, it will be enough to measure the external length manually, taking the measurement in millimeters, and then calculate the internal or primitive length based on the indications provided in the conversion tables that are usually found on the website from the manufacturer. In fact, once the external length has been measured, it will be enough to subtract or add the values indicated in this table to the value found in millimeters, to obtain the real development.
