What are I beams?

I-beams, also known as universal beams, are long steel beams with an I-shaped cross section. They come in two varieties: common I-beams and lightweight I-beams. These beams have an I-shaped cross section and are used as structural elements in construction.

Types of I-Beam

I-beams are mainly divided into three categories: ordinary I-beams, lightweight I-beams and wide-flange I-beams.

The classification of I beams is based on the relationship between the height of the flange and the web, resulting in four categories: wide, medium, narrow and wide flange I beams.

Specifications for common, lightweight I-beams range from 4 to 24 inches in height.

Lightweight I-beams have a narrow flange and thin web, making them lighter compared to other I-beams of the same height.

Wide flange I beams, also known as H beams, are characterized by two parallel legs without any slope within the legs. They are considered an economical form of steel profile and are produced using a four-height universal mill, hence the name “universal I-beam”.

National standards have been established for common and lightweight I-beams.

Calculate weight of the I beam

According to the dimensional, shape, weight and allowable deviation specifications described in GB/T 706-2008 for hot-rolled steel profiles, the typical length of hot-rolled I-beams ranges from 5 to 19 meters.

In the market, I beams are generally delivered based on actual weight or theoretical weight. The deviation between the theoretical weight and the actual weight of an I-beam should not exceed a range of -5% to +3%.
