What is brazing?

Brazing is a joining process that produces coalescence of materials by heating to a suitable temperature and using a filler metal (often called brazing) with a liquidus temperature above 450 degrees C and below the solidus temperature of the base material . The filler metal is drawn into the space between the well-fitting surfaces of the joint by capillary action. To achieve a perfect joint, the filler and base materials must be metallurgically compatible and the joint design must incorporate a minimum gap into which the brazing filler metal will be pulled. Joints must be properly cleaned and protected by flux or protective atmosphere during the heating process to prevent excessive oxidation. There are many forms of brazing, and they all differ in the method of applying heat to the brazing assembly, in particular, to the joint area. These include torch brazing, furnace brazing, induction brazing, immersion brazing, and resistance brazing.

What is welding:

Welding is the most important process for joining large components into complex assemblies or structures. A necessary condition for welding is that two or more surfaces to be joined are in intimate contact. When fusion occurs, the joint is obtained by fusing two or more part materials in a localized region. In contrast, solid-state joining processes rely on the plastic deformation of surface asperities along the contact surface representing the original solder interface or impending solder joint.

The success of a welding process depends not only on the selection of appropriate welding conditions or process parameters, but also on the joint configuration and welding position. Loads applied to a welded structure in actual application are transferred from one member to another through the welded joints.
