Brazing – Definition, Advantages and Disadvantages

Brazing is a process of joining metals by which a filler metal is heated above the melting point and distributed between two or more closely fitted parts by capillary action. The filler metal is brought to slightly above its melting temperature (liquidus) while protected by a suitable atmosphere, usually a flux. It then flows over the base metal (known as wetting) and is then cooled to join the work pieces together. Brazing is similar to welding, except the temperatures used to melt the filler metal are higher.

1. Torch brazing
2. Immersion brazing
3. Furnace brazing

Advantages of Brazing

Following are the advantages of brazing:

(a) Brazing is used to join a wide variety of dissimilar metals.

(b) Properly welded joints are pressure tight.

(c) Parts with large differences in cross-sectional areas can be welded.

(d) Thin sheets, tubes and gauges that cannot be joined by welding may be joined by brazing.

(e) Complex assemblies can be manufactured by this method.

(f) A welded component has the ability to preserve the protective metallic coating.

(g) Brazing can be done on cast and forged materials.

(h) Corrosion resistant joints can be produced by this method.

(j) Brazing preserves the metallurgical characteristics of a material better than welding.

(k) After brazing, a component maintains more precision tolerances than welding.

(l) Brazing processes can be automated for mass production.

(m) Non-metals can be joined to metals.

Disadvantages of Brazing

Following are the disadvantages of brazing:

(a) Requires well-fitting parts.

(b) Requires adequate cleaning.

(c) The size of the work is limited.

(d) Gaskets do not work well at high temperatures.

(e) The color of the filler metal may not match that of the base metal.
