6 Must-Know Welding Leak Stopping Techniques

In industrial production, equipment that operates continuously can present leaks for various reasons, such as leaks in pipes, valves, containers, etc. These leaks can negatively impact production stability, reduce product quality and result in environmental pollution and waste. Furthermore, leaks of dangerous media, such as toxic gases and grease, can pose serious threats to production safety and the environment.

For example, the Qingdao Huangdao pipeline explosion on November 22, 2013, and the Tianjin Binhai New Area dangerous goods warehouse explosion on August 2, 2015 resulted in significant losses of life and property for the country. and its people, both of which were caused by media leaks.

Continuous welding must not be used. The soldering temperature must not exceed an appropriate level.

The spot welding method must be applied with simultaneous cooling.

For example, after spot welding at multiple points, immediately cool the welding points with cotton gauze moistened with water.

Sometimes a combination of these methods may be necessary to effectively stop leaks. Stopping welding leaks requires versatility to ensure success.

However, not all metallic materials are suitable for stopping welding leaks. Only low carbon steel and low alloy steel can utilize these leak containment methods.

Austenitic stainless steel can only be repaired by welding if the base metal near the leak point can undergo significant plastic deformation. Otherwise, welding is not an option.

The medium in heat-resistant steel pipes is normally high-temperature and high-pressure steam.

Leaks that have arisen after prolonged use cannot be repaired under pressure. Welding should not be used to repair low temperature steel under pressure.

All of these welding methods are temporary solutions and do not provide the same metal-mechanical properties as strict welding.

When equipment is not under pressure or does not transport a medium, the temporary leak-blocking welding must be completely removed and the equipment must be re-welded or otherwise repaired to meet product requirements.

Summary

With the advancement of modern production, welding leak stop technology has become a crucial emergency technique in the continuous production process.

Dealing with a leak takes some time and the leak must be completely replaced afterwards.

The use of leak arrest technology must be adaptable.

Various methods can be employed to resolve a leak, with the aim of preventing leaks after welding.
