5G – Replace your smart device with precision machining

5G is activated

5G is about to build a fully connected world. The smart world is the latest connected technology that ensures continuous innovation. The world of the future will be a digital world that includes everyone. Huawei, one of the world's leading 5G technology companies, participated in the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, themed “Digital Village”, to share 5G ideas and intelligence and explore the challenges of the connected smart world.

How should the world advance in 5G?

“Sunrise 5G is working very well, it is the first 5G market leader in Switzerland, we will launch the 5G business in March and it will cover more than 150 cities in our country,” said Sunrise CEO Olaf Swantee at the Huawei Day0 Forum 2019 .

Martin Peronnet, CEO of Monaco Telecom, signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei's representative office in France to improve the Smart Nation planning process to build the 5G Smart Nation Monaco.

XL Axiata is collaborating with Huawei to build Southeast Asia's first 5G-ready streamlined carrier network. This network will cover all of Indonesia to support individuals, families and businesses, provide the best networking experience and promote the process of moving to the digital world.

Why do systems need to be converted to 5G?

Traditional WiFi can no longer reach the 10 Gbps download speed of the new 5G. The current 4G has a download speed of 1 Gbps, some can reach 10 Gbps, but because a single user needs to reach 10 Gbps, the current 4G can only meet the needs of a single user. Therefore, current installations cannot meet 5G requirements and must be built from scratch. The current engine rooms are also not sufficient and must also be rebuilt.

To rebuild these systems and machine rooms, many industrial parts must be redesigned and tested. This development process takes a long time, from the prototype stage to mass production. Many metal parts must be machined with high precision, for example covers made of sheet steel or aluminum with different surface treatments such as powder painting.

Sheet metal processing for 5G systems

For sheet metal, we offer laser cutting, sheet bending, as well as wire cutting for ribs designed into the part. Different bending tools can process different part shapes, see below.

Various bending tools

The straight tool is used to machine the structure without adjacent cuts. If there are details nearby, the use of the tool needs to be reconsidered.

straight tools

There are several bending tools to bend the part if there are undercuts. One of these tools is a small curve tool. If a small curve tool is still too large for the part, there is also a larger curve tool. A sharp tool can be used for obstacles, see image below.

Since sheet metal bending is a very important technology, if you can control the process well, a precision machining bending process will not affect the quality of the parts. The tolerance will be large and the parts will have to deform, that is the problem.

Precision machining during CNC machining involves two main processes: wire cutting and electrical discharge.

With wire cutting, you can create virtually any piece with a single cut of wire. Cut conductive materials from aluminum and copper to graphite with an electrical spark. With EDM technology you can achieve extreme precision when producing incredibly delicate parts at very high cutting speeds. Because only one tool is required, it is also a more economical alternative to milling, turning, grinding, turning or broaching. Furthermore, the multifunctional EDM allows you to carry out a wide range of different processes even without supervision.

EDM for metal recess processing: Unlike plastic parts, metal does not adhere as well as plastic when it is split. Metal parts often need to be welded or use EDM to machine the undercuts. Electrically discharging the material with a brass tool is a very slow process that completes the EDM process.

Wire cutting

EDM helps solve many problems encountered in CNC precision machining: Hardness. In traditional processes, metal parts are made from special hardness steels that are machined in a soft annealed state to facilitate cutting.

As the dielectric fluid breaks down, the risk of an unstable discharge increases. Control electronics can compensate for the risk to some extent, but the only real solution is to continually pump clean dielectric fluid through the cutting zone to wash it out. The more conductive particles the fluid contains, the more difficult it is for the machine to maintain stable electrical boundaries within the spark gap.

For some metal boxes used as cosmetic covers, more emphasis is placed on surface quality after EDM. After the discharge process, the surface becomes rough and black. If the surface is larger and can be smoothed by grinding, manufacturers machine the surface to ensure good quality.

Spark erosion

For parts used outdoors, there are some post-treatments that extend their useful life. For example, in anodizing and powder coating, hard anodizing can be done with chemical film and sealing after finishing. When powder coating, you can choose outdoor powder coating, which is specifically suitable for parts that have only been used outdoors for years or decades. Both treatments can help cover machining marks for a better appearance.

The world is on the move, innovations will never stop, machining technology needs to improve machining methods and specifications, there is still a long way to go until we achieve truly precise machining that will benefit every designer and bring their ideas to fruition. One day, when there are no more prescribed steps for designers to follow when editing, the world will be truly automatic and intelligent.

We believe mobile 5G will drive the next wave of unexpected innovations. 5G is the next generation of mobile broadband that will eventually replace or at least complement your 4G LTE connection. With 5G, you'll experience exponentially faster download and upload speeds. Latency, the time it takes devices to communicate with each other over wireless networks, will also decrease dramatically.
