Oficial de Segurança de Construção: Responsabilidades e Deveres

Construction Safety Officer: Responsibilities and Duties

In recent years, builders and contractors have paid more attention to workplace safety. A company that promotes security measures will have a higher percentage of employee retention. Safety measures also create suitable working conditions, resulting in better performance and a pleasant working environment. Construction safety officers are responsible for creating and implementing safety measures in constructions.

A construction safety officer implements safety policies and regulations on a construction site and ensures they are followed. Their primary responsibility is to create a safe environment for construction workers, but they may take on additional roles and responsibilities during a project.

Professional construction management can make your construction projects safer.

Construction safety officers work closely with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is part of the United States Department of Labor and the organization works to create safe and healthy working conditions. OSHA establishes and enforces standards while providing public outreach, ongoing education, and assistance.

Today, the construction industry is moving toward augmented reality, BIM, and other technologies that will change the way security officers interact with a project.

  • These emerging technologies can help detect dangerous situations during the planning stages of a project.
  • Safety officials can rely on them to create mitigation strategies and accident response plans.
  • Inspection technologies are also evolving day by day, and some companies use drones or UAVs to perform security audits and inspections.

A construction safety officer's duties include ensuring that construction workers take appropriate safety measures. They must have full knowledge of safety and security methods, equipment and construction materials. Since many construction activities are carried out outdoors, there are many external hazards such as the weather on construction sites.

Roles of Construction Safety Officers

Construction safety officers create, implement and enforce safety policies that reduce the risk of accidents. It is your responsibility to determine what policies are necessary for your workplace and how to apply them. Those responsible for security must have up-to-date knowledge of security methods and standards. This way, they can keep policies up to date and renew them when new risks are discovered.

Safety officers conduct on-site inspections to determine dangerous situations. They must also create regulations and policies to overcome them. For example, broken equipment and faulty tools pose a danger to construction workers, and safety officials are responsible for detecting these problems. They also specify the necessary personal protective equipment and ensure that workers know how to handle tools and equipment properly.

Accident investigation is also among the tasks of those responsible for construction safety. A construction safety officer's main goal is to prevent workplace accidents, but if an accident occurs, he or she must investigate and collect evidence to determine its causes. Once an investigation is conducted, they will document the findings and recommendations to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

Security officers are responsible for reviewing and meeting all federal and state recordkeeping requirements. Safety officers must complete OSHA Form 300, which is a summary of all injuries that resulted in lost work time and other problems. They also ensure that certain OSHA regulations are met, such as displaying appropriate safety posters and other documents.

Summary of Construction Safety Officer Responsibilities

  • Continuous inspection of project sites to ensure a hazard-free environment
  • Assessment and approval of subcontractor safety plans
  • Checking tools and equipment to ensure good quality
  • Promote safe practices on site
  • Create and enforce security guidelines and programs
  • Carrying out drills and exercises to manage emergency situations
  • Carrying out accident investigations
  • Verify that all security reports are submitted to related government institutions.
  • Responding to worker safety concerns
  • Manages all communications with government departments regarding security
  • Organizes OSHA-required site assessments
  • Coordinates all issues relating to hazardous materials or waste
  • Assist in preparing a construction health and safety plan
  • Participate in project planning meetings and collaborate with construction managers
  • Establish and maintain health and safety communication frameworks
  • Testing the Effectiveness of Local Emergency Response Plans
  • Continuous monitoring of all documents, reports and security-related issues to keep them up to date.

Construction Safety Officer Training

Construction safety officers must stay up to date with the latest information on safety procedures and are required to participate in training programs. Security officers need to be proactive and stay ahead of environmental and security risks.

By staying up to date, security officers can determine the best training programs for workers on a given job. The safety officer provides training to employees on safety topics required by OSHA. These include fire prevention plans, machine guarding and handling of hazardous materials. Safety officials can solicit feedback from workers and use it to improve existing plans or create new ones.

The fundamental role of construction safety managers is to maintain a safe environment for workers during all phases of a project. Having a proper security plan is necessary to deliver a project on time and within budget. Each accident causes disruption to the project and the human consequences can be serious – accident prevention must be a project priority.
