A well is a type of structure usually built or placed underground to carry out inspections or connect pipes, etc.

It is a very useful structure in construction and offers numerous advantages.

A general definition of a well can be described below.

A manhole is a manhole that provides access to public services such as sewers, drainage systems, water supply systems, etc.

Purposes of the manhole

  • Inspection – Used as an inspection chamber. Long pipelines require inspection for several reasons.
  • Cleaning – When it is necessary to clean pipes, manholes located at regular intervals are used.
  • Maintenance – Maintenance of underground pipes is necessary. They can be used to transport liquids or even for electrical work.
  • How to Connect Two Pipes – When pipes are installed, they must be connected to maintain continuity. For example, a sewer pipe or a water pipe can be considered.
  • How to Prevent Nasty Gases from Leaking – When sewer lines run from end to end, harmful gases leak. If we build sealed wells, these can be avoided.
  • To maintain the conventional length – the tubes cannot be full length. We need to have a connection. We need to have an axis at the junction for several reasons, as discussed above.

Types of culverts

They can be mainly classified into two main categories.

  • Circular types

Generally, the round type is more popular because of its advantages over the square type.

It is more stable in terms of structural stability. The circular shape does not cause bending and shear forces. Instead, tensions are created in the rings and meridians. As concrete is resistant to compression, these shafts require less reinforcement and a smaller cross-sectional thickness.

  • Square Types

The square type is also more commonly used. Due to the nature of the structure, this type may be more expensive compared to the circular type.

Other types of categorization

Depending on the depth or height of the shaft, these can be divided into three types.

  • Shallow
  • Typically low
  • Deep

Furthermore, they are categorized according to the type of construction material used.

Types of culverts based on the material used

  • In situ concrete

The most used construction material is concrete. Since it is easily available, it can be easily used for construction purposes.

  • Precast concrete parts
  • steel

Steel is not a commonly used type of shaft. However, steel is used as a substitute for concrete in old and new buildings.

However, attention must be paid to durability as corrosion is a problem in steel structures.

  • plastic

It is a modern type of well used in construction. It is very useful due to its advantages.

The advantages of these types include low construction cost, greater durability, no reaction with reactive materials such as wastewater, easy placement, etc.

Due to its low weight, it cannot be placed in areas with high water levels (close to the ground).
