Cement classification

There are different classifications for cement. In this article, we will focus on classifying cement based on its compressive strength class.

For more information on cement classification, see the article “ Cement and cement additives ”.

The classification described in this article is based on compressive strength after 28 days measured on a mortar prism. Testing is carried out in accordance with BS EN 196-1.

There are essentially five strength classes

  1. 22.5
  2. 32.5
  3. 42.5
  4. 52.5
  5. 62.5

There are also two other medium resistance classes.

They are 37.5 and 47.5 and are intended for a Portland cement mix combination. They are manufactured using a mixer combination of Portland cement (equivalent to BS 12) and granulated ground blast furnace slag (ggbs) (equivalent to BS 6699).

The article published in brmca contains some valuable information about cement.
